Here At Austerlitz Where So Many Lie Dead

My eyes open unexpectedly in the midst of the field of battle.
All I can see above me is the blue sky overhead.
I am stricken and can't move to see the glittering uniform I fought to defend.

The sky is very, very blue and far above, dotted by wispy patches.
Even just one day ago, I would not have noticed these simple clouds,
but now I grasp at them as at my only salvation. I gasp for air.

"Can there be any other life in this world but that haggard patch of blue?" I ask.
"Can life be so precious that it must be dealt out to me in such small quantities?"
I don't care about the answer. I just don't care. I grab hard hold of what I have left.
