The long gray waves fiercely breaking
explosively against the rocks.
The sea intent it seems on taking
what is not hers. The basalt mocks.
Defies her efforts easily
It stands steadfast as it has
done for slowly passing centuries.
But still the sea will battle on.
The sea cannot defeat the land.
The land cannot defeat the sea.
But neither seems to understand
and so they try continually.
The strip between high and low tide
at high tide covered by the sea.
Is forever changing sides
as the low tide sets it free.
A no mans land neither controls.
Holds what the sea has left behind.
A sandy shore that man patrols
to see what treasure he may find.
The land can't win nor can the sea.
but man will always find a way
to seize an opportunity
to make a profit come what may.
