"Cooking With Onions"
(a true story)

274 Words
At my wedding shower 24 years ago, each guest was given a 3"x 5" card to write down her best piece of marital advice for the bride-to-be. Then the cards were hole-punched and attached to a metal ring, to be given to the bride at the end of the shower.
Ruth, the dear mother of a friend, wrote this on her card:
"When a man comes bounding through the front door after a hard day at work, he wants to smell dinner cooking in the oven. If you work outside of the home or are just running late, here's what you do:
As soon as you're inside the house, go directly to the kitchen. Reach into the vegetable bin and take out one large onion. Set your oven to 250 degrees. Then place the onion on a cutting board and slice it in half. Place both halves of the onion in a Pyrex baking dish, and pop the dish into the oven. Shut the oven door and let the onion cook.
Now you can sit down for awhile, put your feet up and relax without feeling guilty.
When your husband walks through the front door after a hard day at the office and smells the mouth-watering aroma coming from the kitchen, he will have no doubt that you are a miracle worker!
This is your cue to humbly accept your man's approval, give him a little peck on the cheek and return to the kitchen to start making dinner."
(Ruth did this every night for 60 years, and never once did her husband suspect a thing!)
